The H, L, O, P, R and other categories depend on the occupation and the type of relationship. For many routes the employer or agent must first have a USCIS petition approved.

Who it is for
- A suitable visa category
- A job offer, transfer or record of achievement as the category requires
- An approved USCIS petition where required
Documents
A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.
- A valid passport and copies of its pages
- A completed application form and recent photographs
- The I-797 or petition number, the contract or offer, your qualification and evidence that you meet the category
- Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
- A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category
Application steps
- 1Choose the work category
- 2The employer or agent files the petition and completes the labour stage if one is needed
- 3Complete the DS-160 after approval
- 4Attend the interview and enter within the limits of the authorised employment
After arrival
- Work only under the conditions of your status
- Keep track of the I-94 and the petition validity
- Start an extension or change of employer well in advance
