F-1 is used for academic study, M-1 for vocational programmes and J-1 for approved exchanges. The process starts with the school or the sponsor.

Who it is for
- Admission to an SEVP-certified institution, or an approved J programme
- Form I-20 or DS-2019
- SEVIS, funding and the intention to comply with the conditions of the status
Documents
A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.
- A valid passport and copies of its pages
- A completed application form and recent photographs
- The I-20 or DS-2019, the SEVIS receipt, proof of admission, funds and academic documents
- Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
- A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category
Application steps
- 1Obtain the I-20 or DS-2019
- 2Pay the applicable SEVIS fee
- 3Complete the DS-160 and book the interview
- 4After issuance, enter no earlier than the permitted date
After arrival
- Maintain full-time status and stay in touch with your DSO or sponsor
- Work only in the cases your status permits
- Apply for OPT, CPT or an extension in good time where applicable
