Study and exchange F-1, M-1, J-1

F-1 is used for academic study, M-1 for vocational programmes and J-1 for approved exchanges. The process starts with the school or the sponsor.

Who it is for

  • Admission to an SEVP-certified institution, or an approved J programme
  • Form I-20 or DS-2019
  • SEVIS, funding and the intention to comply with the conditions of the status

Documents

A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.

  • A valid passport and copies of its pages
  • A completed application form and recent photographs
  • The I-20 or DS-2019, the SEVIS receipt, proof of admission, funds and academic documents
  • Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
  • A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category

Application steps

  1. 1Obtain the I-20 or DS-2019
  2. 2Pay the applicable SEVIS fee
  3. 3Complete the DS-160 and book the interview
  4. 4After issuance, enter no earlier than the permitted date

After arrival

  • Maintain full-time status and stay in touch with your DSO or sponsor
  • Work only in the cases your status permits
  • Apply for OPT, CPT or an extension in good time where applicable
