Family reunification
The family of a lawfully resident third-country national normally needs a Nulla Osta. Since 2025 many sponsors must have two years of continuous lawful residence; exceptions are provided for.

Who it is for
- A qualifying family member and an evidenced relationship
- The sponsor's valid status and the applicable period of residence
- Sufficient income and accommodation that meets the requirements
Documents
A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.
- A valid passport and copies of its pages
- A completed application form and recent photographs
- The Nulla Osta, relationship documents, the sponsor's residence permit, income and the certificato di idoneità alloggiativa
- Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
- A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category
Application steps
- 1Check the relative's category and the sponsor's period of residence
- 2Prove your income and the suitability of the accommodation
- 3Obtain the Nulla Osta
- 4Apply for the family visa and, after arrival, the permesso
After arrival
- Start the permesso procedure within eight working days
- Register your address, healthcare and school
- The family permesso is normally tied to the validity of the sponsor's status
