For most workers the employer first obtains a Nulla Osta through the Sportello Unico. Some hiring runs under the Decreto Flussi quotas; certain categories are admitted outside them.

Documents
A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.
- A valid passport and copies of its pages
- A completed application form and recent photographs
- The Nulla Osta, the offer or contract, the employer's documents, accommodation and your qualification
- Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
- A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category
Application steps

- 3The worker applies for the national D visa
- 4After arrival the contratto di soggiorno is signed and the permesso is requested
After arrival
- Complete the residence contract within the set deadlines
- Apply for the permesso di soggiorno
- Obtain the codice fiscale, register your address and your health registration
