Work permit
An employer-specific permit is tied to the employer and usually requires an LMIA or an exempt offer number. An open work permit is available only in specific situations.

Who it is for
- A job offer and an LMIA, or a lawful exemption, for an employer-specific permit
- Eligibility for an open permit only through a programme that provides for it
- Qualification, experience and a medical examination where required
Documents
A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.
- A valid passport and copies of its pages
- A completed application form and recent photographs
- The offer or contract, the LMIA or offer of employment number, experience, a licence and the local checklist
- Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
- A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category
Application steps
- 1Determine the type of permit and whether an LMIA is needed
- 2The employer completes their stage
- 3Submit the IRCC application and biometrics
- 4If approved, travel with the letter of introduction and your entry document
After arrival
- Collect the permit at the border and check its conditions
- Obtain a SIN
- Do not change employer without a new authorisation if the permit is closed
