Opportunity Card — job seeking

The Opportunity Card is issued for up to 12 months initially. It is open to recognised professionals or through the points system; in 2026 you must prove funding of €1,091 per month, taking permitted income into account.

Who it is for

  • A qualification recognised in Germany, or meeting the basic conditions of the points system
  • For the points route — German from A1 or English from B2, plus the required number of points
  • Proven funds for the whole job-seeking period

Documents

A basic preparation list. The competent authority creates the personal checklist based on citizenship and place of application.

  • A valid passport and copies of its pages
  • A completed application form and recent photographs
  • Degree or qualification, language certificate, points calculation and proof of funding
  • Proof of funds, accommodation and health insurance — where required
  • A police clearance certificate, medical documents, translation and legalisation — if listed for the chosen category

Application steps

  1. 1Check the first route — recognised professional; otherwise calculate your points
  2. 2Prepare your language and financial evidence
  3. 3Apply for the national visa or Opportunity Card
  4. 4Once you have an offer, switch to a work residence permit

After arrival

  • Part-time work of up to 20 hours per week in total is allowed
  • Short trial employment is permitted within the set limits
  • Apply for a suitable work residence permit before the card expires
