From 1 March 2026 many foreign nationals without permanent residence must first obtain a separate right to work for local employment or self-employment, and only then the applicable D1 visa or work residence permit.

A study residence permit is issued to a foreign national studying at an authorised Georgian educational institution.

Family reunification

A temporary family permit is for relatives of a foreign national who already holds Georgian residence; close family of a Georgian citizen may qualify for permanent residence under separate rules.

Property and investment

A short-term permit is possible with ownership of non-agricultural property worth more than USD 150,000 in GEL equivalent; the investment permit requires investment or property above USD 300,000 plus further conditions.

What citizens of Russia and Kazakhstan need

The baseline document list is the same for everyone, but the visa regime, legalisation and translations depend on your citizenship. Below are the differences, checked against official sources.

Russia

No visa needed, up to 365 days

A Russian citizen enters without a visa and may stay for up to one year at a time. After that you must exit and re-enter, or obtain a residence permit.

Health insurance is mandatory from 1 January 2026
The policy is checked at passport control. Per the Health Ministry the cover must be at least USD 5,000 for outpatient care and USD 30,000 for inpatient care, for the whole stay and regardless of the purpose of travel.

Police clearance certificate from the Russian Interior Ministry
Ordered through Gosuslugi or the Interior Ministry; issuance takes up to 30 days. Filing abroad usually requires an apostille and a sworn translation.

Civil registry certificates, official statements and diplomas are accepted abroad only with an apostille affixed in the issuing country. It goes on the original or a notarised copy, depending on the authority's rules.

Belarus

Belarus is on the list of visa-free countries approved by the Government of Georgia (Ordinance No 255, item 14). Citizens of the listed countries may enter and stay in Georgia without a visa for one full year.
